bdBLOG: September 9

Over the past couple of weeks it has been brought to my attention exactly how infrequently I look at the ingredients in my skincare and makeup.

Our skin fights daily to protect itself against the harsh environment. As it fights it becomes more fragile and sensitive and, if you’re using the wrong types of ingredients, sensitive skin can break out. Chemicals in skincare are absorbed into the skin and these can be the cause of skin irritations.

So for those of you who are a little like me and don’t give your ingredient listing a second look, here are some common ingredients that appear in the products you’ll be using this summer.

– Recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists to combat harmful UVA and UVB rays. This yellowish powder occurs in nature as the mineral zincite and is safe to use on the skin.

Red Dye (Carmine)– For those with very sensitive skin this could be an ingredient to be aware of. This ingredient is usually included in bronzers and blushes so if you notice breakouts around the cheeks and cheekbones, this could be cause.

– Is used in cosmetics as an absorbent and bulking agent. There is still a risk of possible contamination with impurities as cosmetic grade talc is non-regulated. Talc is a harsher mineral and is not as fine as other options. Bulking ingredients such as talc can make pores appear larger.
