The hair and make-up trends that are hot property this summer

With the weather already hitting 34 degrees+, summer is well and truly on its way. beautydirectory tracked down an outrageous number of Australia’s top hair and make-up experts to discover the beauty looks and styles that are set to sizzle this summertime.

HAIR

Colour

Lighten up

In line with clothing wardrobes getting switched over from winter to summer, hair colour is also witnessed going through a change to match the new season. As the weather gets warmer, most of us start to think about taking our hair colour a little lighter and brighter. We are continuing to see salon guests enjoying the ombre blonding and natural highlights and heading towards lighter hair shades. The beach babe is coming out of hibernation!” says John Pizzey of Australia.

Replacing darker tones will be soft hues and the merging of colours. Australian design team artist Kerrie DiMattia says this season will see consumers replace the deeper colours of winter with softer hues of peach and strawberry blonde, latte brunettes, and pale blends of coppers and golds. and national ASK manager Billy Wheadon adds, Blonde is merging with brunette to create new shades of both, dark brunettes are going golden without turning blonde, and pastels are still on trend. Reds are also merging with blondes to see strawberry blondes appear more, and true reds are featuring a great deal of copper shades.” Sun-kissed highlights are also set to be a dominant force.

Ombré

A hair colour trend that continues to divide hairdressers is ombré - with some believing the trend is still going strong, while others think it’s over. An ombré believer, L'Oréal Paris national education manager Bronwyn Fraser says, Ombré hair is a trend that although has been around for a while is still growing in popularity, and fits perfectly for summer giving a casual, sun-lightened, bright and beachy look.” Other supporters of the ombré look for this summer are DiMattia and Clairol colour expert Belinda Jeffrey, while founder Kevin Murphy believes the trend has died out. Colour will be all over, no more ombre and no streaks,” says Murphy.

Pastels

Following past seasons, pastel colours will still be around this summer. co-creative director Joey Scandizzo reveals that pink shades will be especially big, while Goldwell Professional’s Kate McQuitty from Prema believes it’s all about the gold. Last year’s softer pastels will be brought to life with shades of golden syrups, rose Champagne, honeycombs and copper golds,” says McQuitty.

Cut

The bob and lob

Victoria Beckham’s sharp bob may have had a new style named after it (the pob), but Rose Byrne gave her a run for her money when she stepped out at the Oscars last year with a blunt bob. Since then, the bob and lob (long bob) have been hitting the headlines (and the hairdresser’s scissors). Bobs with bold fringes and sharply cut concaved bobs are being seen everywhere,” says Fraser. A popular choice for hot weather, the shorter style means hair is lighter weight for summer and less time is needed for styling. Bobs are great for the warmer months as they instantly update your style with a fresh look,” reveals ANZ creative director Kate Reid.

For ghd’s Alan White, the key to the bob is to keep the look non-predictable, undone but still with polish. Blunt cut fringes, low side swept fringes, uneven layers, asymmetrical cuts, and defused movements and waves,” says White. director Mark Gariglio describes the two key styles for this cut are the lob - straight and slightly con-caved at the ends with or without a fringe - sleek and sexy, and the graduated bob with soft, invisible layers throughout.

Layers

We’ve seen layers in hair for season after season, but the popularity of the bob and lob has seen them ditched in favour of hair that’s all one length, according to both Scandizzo and Murphy. Offering another opinion, DiMattia believes that summer will see more layers added to the lob. I’m really in love with the lob right now, but rather than the unlayered version we’ve been used to for the cooler months, I think we will be seeing a few more layers emerge with a distinct beachy texture and appearance,” says DiMattia. artistic director Antonio Corral Calero believes grown-out layers will be big news news this summer.

Off with the pixies

As celebrities continue to chop off their locks in favour of the pixie look, hairdressers predict that this summer will see a lot of short hair doing the rounds. Short hair is making a comeback, even though it may be a slow comeback,” says Murphy. When it comes to pixie cuts, there are a few different styles that are in vogue. For White, it’s all about grown out layered pixie cuts that are a little longer and more tousled. Gariglio uses celebrity examples to describe the two key pixie looks for this summer: The Charlize Theron/Miley Cyrus crop - which is closely shorn to the head all around, with slight volume on top and worn to the side or as a slight mohawk with a feminine edge, and the modern pixie like Anne Hathaway - it has a long, side-swept fringe and the back is short and heavily layered for a soft, feminine line.”

Style

It’s time to ditch the straightening iron this summer, with undone and effortless styles set to be trending. Lots of volume rather than flat-ironed looks are hot right now,” says Fraser. Pizzey agrees with this sentiment, revealing: Texture is definitely back in fashion and a movement away from the dead straight flat-ironed hair.” The voluminous hair trend will see beach waves through to retro curls being big (literally) come summertime.

Shine and the wet-look will also be making the rounds. Sleek hair is going to play a major role - hair is slicked back and full of shine,” according to Wheadon. For Reid, luminous, natural shine is key for hair in spring/summer 2014.

MAKE-UP

Look

Taking a page from hair trends, make-up this summer is set to be natural with minimal effort needed. Natural make-up remains a big trend this season and the barely there fresh-faced look is set to feature strongly,” says Models Prefer buyer cosmetics Emma Hogan. and brand manager Beryl Ita points to the craze of BB and CC creams as the main drivers behind the current popular natural make-up looks.

Brows

Some designers may have attempted to deliver the no eyebrow look” at the recent international fashion week shows, but eyebrows are still the main frame to the face, according to co-founder George Labropoulos. Brows will continue to be full, bold and groomed this summertime. Fuller-figured brows continue to reign supreme. Keep the frame of the brow softer to emulate natural hairs as opposed to a clean, painted on effect,” says ’ Kate Squires.

Eyes

Last summer it was all about using eyeliner to create art around the eyes. This year it’s about adding colour and drama to the eyeliner. Eyes tend to be dramatic in terms of winged eyeliner (black and electric blue are prevalent choices),” says SLA national make-up artist Shae Macintyre. With Lambropoulos adding, There is real trend following on from cat's eyes with basic black winged eyeliner to the new coloured winged eyeliner.”

When it comes to eyeshadows - metallics and colour will replace the neutral trends of seasons past. Lots of metallic colours for the eyes in gold and silver but also coloured metallics like purple and blue,” says BB Cream brand and account executive Niva Thongkham. As well as metallic-hued eyeshadow, lids are set to feature metal itself, with MeMeMe’s Rebecca Braham stating, metallic shimmery eyeshadows and jewelled lids are bang on trend.”

It’s not just about metallics, vibrant eyeshadow colours are also going to be popping up everywhere, according to managing director and head make-up artist Leia Corrie. This turn to colour is also reflected in the smokey eye, with Lambropolous revealing that the traditional black/grey is being replaced with the new emerald, burgundy, navy and golden smokey eye.

Lips

Get ready for bold colour when it comes to lips. The trends we'll be seeing this summer will be lots of bold colours for lips - especially bright corals and fuchsias,” says Thongkham. Red is the new go-to shade, from orange reds to true reds. This summer, it’s all about the bold cherry red lip,” states brand expert Eddie Norcross. While it is all about the red, other popular shades will be orange, fuchsia and pale pinks. But embrace the colour, because it’s not set to last. As we head into autumn, we will be moving away from bright lips and nails towards nude tones - so enjoy colour while the weather is fine!” advises Hogan.

Lips are also set to be creamy and textured. The lip look is intense, full coverage colour with a creamy finish (not quite matte, not quite gloss),” says Macintyre, with Squires adding, for lips it's all about texture; whether stained, glossy or metallic.”

Skin

In line with the natural” hair and make-up trends of the season, skin is set to look healthy and fresh. Looking moisturised, luminous and healthy is more important than dewy or matte,” says marketing manager Juliana Hui, with Benefit Australia national education manager Hannah Terrett adding that it’s all about, natural, luminous fresh skin.” Lambropoulos believes that skin will be dewy for a minimal everyday look, however, will be more matte (but not totally matte) for evening looks. Macintyre warns that dewy skin is definitely going to be hot property - but with restraint: not sparkly or glossy so much as a flawless radiance and defined contouring with subtle colour.”

Looking ahead, Maybelline NY make-up director Nigel Stanislaus reveals that as the season turns, runway looks will opt for a more matte finish that will still retain a healthy glow. In the meantime, think fresh and healthy and you’ll be on the money. Squires concludes, This summer skin is expensive and luxe. Rich and creamy in texture with minimal coverage. It's more radiant than dewy and more fresh than matte.”
