BD Fast Five: Tamsin Marshall

We caught up with the gorgeous Tamsin Marhsall, the new Beauty Editor for NEXT and Simply You, to discuss all things beauty!

If you could only take five products (make-up/hair/skin/fragrance) away with you on holiday, what would they be?

Only five is hard and you could ask me this again in a month’s time and my choices might change. Cleanser is a must; I can’t go to bed without cleansing my face even when I don’t wear makeup and I always cleanse again in the morning. I’ve been using the La Mer Micellar Water which is non-irritating. I like too, it’s great at removing all makeup plus my skin feels hydrated after.

I’d have to pack a moisturiser, I like Environ Skincare for the Vitamin A but then I’d also have to pack a sunscreen. I’m very particular about wearing sunscreen. I either wear Environ Skincare Sun Care RAD Lotion or Pure Shade Moisturising Sunscreen which has a luminizing effect on skin. On my body I like to use Invisible Zinc.

My hair needs serious taming and I’ve just discovered a natural serum called Elixir Lux made in New Zealand by hair stylist Adelle Rodda called Botaniq, it’s made out of natural plant ingredients and totally stops the frizz. I think it’s put my hair in a better condition too.

Before I got the Yumi Lash lift at Lash Noir I would have said I’d take mascara but now I don’t need to. I think my final product would have to be an all-in-one like which I would use on my lips and anywhere that need extra attention.

What does your morning and evening skincare regimen comprise?

My mornings are fairly hectic with getting my daughter to school and myself to the office so I keep it fairly fast and minimal. Once a week in the shower I use a body scrub – I love Pure Fiji New Zealand Sugar Rub . Straight after I get out of the shower I lightly towel dry and then apply moisturising oil on my legs and arms. I’ve been using   on my body lately. Then I apply facial moisturiser and eye cream and sunscreen. In the evening I like to wash away the day and cleanse off my makeup. I’ll spend a bit longer massaging my skin with serums. And apply an eye cream. I have never slept with my makeup on – not once!

Do you change up your fragrance or stick to the tried and true? What are you wearing right now?

I love fragrance; I have a few favourites that I rotate between depending on my mood. Today I’m wearing Black Orchid by Tom Ford which lately has been a bit of a fave. I also love Jo Malone London Velvet Rose and Oud. I absolutely adore Curio Noir – I love that Tiffany is creating such beautiful fragrances from down under. I alternate between Opia and Diaphanous depending on my frame of mind. Fragrance has always been a big part of my life; my Mum was very fond of it too. I often burn candles at home to set the mood.

Beauty-wise, where do you go to treat yourself?

I don’t get to treat myself as often as I’d like. I love going to Lash Noir for my lashes and brows, it’s such a quick treatment that always makes me feel so much better. I had a dreamy facial at Rosenthal Skincare that soothed the soul. Fresh locks are a must and I love going to Oscar and Co in Takapuna or Hamilton Brooks Hairdressing in Newmarket.

Do you have any beauty regrets?

Back in my misguided youth I decided to cut my hair into a pixie cut… this would have been about the time that Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder did too which looked amazing on their straight hair but on my curly, frizzy prone mane it took a lot of gel to make it stay sleek. This is pre-ghd days so you can imagine that battle I had on my hands. Most of the time this style looked ok… until the time I went on holiday with my family without a hairdryer and let’s just say those photos shall never see the light of day and I’m super glad there was no Facebook back then.

What are you most excited for in your new role?

Everything! I’m excited to be writing about new products, innovation and techniques; working with so many great people in this industry and most of all to be inspiring readers who trust our advice in the pages of our magazines and online.
