Meet the first-to-market biodegradable toothbrush

Brushing our teeth is something we do twice a day without fail, yet most of us don’t give much thought to which toothbrush we buy – as long as it does the job, right? However, the mainstream plastic toothbrush is a key contributor to the 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste that goes to NZ landfills each year – and it’s time for a change.

Greener alternatives to the plastic toothbrush have been popping up in the market as we grow more conscious about our environment, but Grin Natural Products Natural Products have bought something new to the table with their new corn starch toothbrushes which are 100% biodegradable. With their beautiful design and bright colours, they don’t look like your typical ‘green’ toothbrush, but they are just as eco-friendly as ones made from bamboo.

The brush handle is made from sustainable non-GMO corn starch and will biodegrade in a home or commercial compost – all you have to do is use a pair of pliers to remove the bristles first, which can be recycled via the Grin Recycling Program.

The bristles on the adult brushes are infused with premium activated charcoal, an ingredient which is recognised for its antibacterial and detoxifying properties. Charcoal also helps keep bacteria at bay and restores the whiteness of teeth. The kid’s brushes have extra soft rounded nylon bristles specifically designed for sensitive teeth and gums.

Tara Tan, Marketing Manager of Grin Natural says, ““New Zealanders consume and dispose of over eight million toothbrushes a year, and if you have a look at the direct impact on this, it’s very disturbing as the majority of these toothbrushes will end up in our landfill and oceans and will take centuries to break down. This is not sustainable so we’ve made it our mission to help change this.”
