National newspaper set to debut

A national paper is out to prove that world issues shouldn’t be considered adults-only, with the debut of Crinkling News. The newspaper is the only one of its kind in Australia, intended to cover the latest in world discoveries and events but in a manner suitable for kids.

The newspaper describes its vision: “Crinkling News aims to educate the Australian adults of tomorrow about the world around them, to inspire them to participate in their local and global community, to foster a love of reading and learning and writing, and to entertain them with the extraordinary tales that form the story of humanity.”

The team behind the publication is impressively experienced in the journalism world - with founding editor Saffron Howden a former Sydney Morning Herald journalist. Chief sub-editor Judy Prisk was formerly at Fairfax and The Guardian, with contributors including Fairfax Middle East correspondent Ruth Pollard, Sun Herald editor Rick Feneley and award-winning photographers Nick Moir and Dallas Kilponen.

Puzzles, photography, cartoons and entertaining stories will also be incorporated, as well as an opportunity for kids to become a reporter for the newspaper themselves.

The website was first launched in January and proved instantly popular with 300 paid subscriptions accrued within a fortnight at a fee of $4.50 per week. The print edition of Crinkling News is set to make its debut in April.
