Jurlique celebrates 35 years of advanced natural skincare

As leading natural skincare brand, Jurlique, celebrates its 35th year, it reflects on all the years it has harnessed the life force of nature to create advanced natural skincare.

Jurlique’s Seed to Skin journey commenced in 1985 by visionary husband and wife founders, Dr Jurgen Klein – a biochemist and naturopath, and Ulrike Klein – a botanist and horticulturalist. Together, they dreamed of creating 'the purest skin care on Earth" and searched the world for the perfect place to bring their dream to life. In August 1985, they found the ideal spot, the unspoiled Adelaide Hills in South Australia - where the biodynamic and organic Jurlique farm can still be found today.

For 35 years, Jurlique’s practices have been guided by a specially created biodynamic calendar, based on the moon and planet positioning, which allows Jurlique to work in harmony with nature to produce botanicals that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The Jurlique biodynamic farm is completely self-sustaining, respecting and caring for the Earth.

In 1988, Jurlique trademarked its exclusive Bio-Intrinsic™ extraction method. This alchemistic process harnesses the purity and potency of their ingredients to create powerful extracts that form the basis of Jurlique skincare. After the organic farm-grown ingredients are harvested and dried, the farm team capture their vital life force using a three-step extraction process.

In 1991, the first Jurlique Concept stores opened in Adelaide and Melbourne, followed by the first international Jurlique store in Singapore in 1992. There are now over 570 stores worldwide, including 12 spas across Australia that offer expertly curated facial and body treatments.

Over the course of 35 years, Jurlique has continued to evolve while ensuring its founding spirit and commitment to sustainability is more alive than ever. A key goal for Jurlique – to reduce its environmental footprint throughout the brand's entire supply chain, from extraction of raw materials to final disposal of packaging – remains as strong today as it was on day one.

Jurlique's key sustainability achievements include:

- Over 12,000 native trees have been planted at the Jurlique Farm on National Tree Planting Day events since 2012. This annual initiative started in South Australia, and has expanded into China and Hong Kong.

- Water usage at the Jurlique Natural Beauty Plant was reduced by 25%, thanks to the underground rainwater capturing tanks and more efficient manufacturing technologies.

- Recycled water is used to irrigate all crops with rainwater used for washing and drinking, and even the compost used to enrich the soil at the Jurlique Farm is made from the organic plants grown on the property.

- Since 2016, the Jurlique Farm has sent zero non-hazardous waste to landfill.

- In partnership with global recycling pioneers, TerraCycle, customers are encouraged to recycle their empty Jurlique products. Since initiating this program in 2018, over 120,000 units of Jurlique packaging has been collected, equating to almost three tonnes of waste that has been diverted from landfills and incinerators.

- As Jurlique entered its 35th year, early 2020 saw catastrophic bushfires sweep through large regions of Australia, causing devasting effects to the local environment and wildlife. In addition to donating significant financial contributions, from August 2020 up to 3,000 tree seedings at any one time will be nurtured at the Jurlique Farm to support regeneration efforts in neighbouring Cudlee Creek, which was declared an emergency disaster area.

- Currently Jurlique has over 20 CSR Champions and Green Team members across five global locations who voluntarily come together to educate, inspire and empower employees around sustainability.

Looking to the future with positivity, evolving the business, and retail continuing to be top of mind, Jurlique recently announced the appointment of two new senior leadership team members. Olivier Duvillard has been appointed general manager to lead ANZ, and Marion Goyet has been chosen as director of consumer marketing, leading the global Jurlique consumer marketing team.

Both Duvillard and Goyet have embraced the opportunity to contribute and shape Jurlique’s future growth and success.
