The Australian editor stepping down

After nearly five years at the top job, The Australian’s editor Clive Mathieson has resigned. The journalist will be moving across to the political sphere, confirming he will begin a new placement as senior strategic advisor for NSW Premier Mike Baird.

Mathieson first joined the News Corp-owned publication in 2002 and was made editor in 2011. His new role will begin next month as the director of economic, infrastructure and state priorities.

Mathieson comments on his departure to Mumbrella: “The Australian is, and always will be, the nation’s best newspaper with the finest stable of journalists. To be involved at a senior [level] has been a privilege and I wish Paul and my dedicated colleagues every success in the future.”

Editor-in-chief Paul Whittaker laments: “Clive has been a loyal and trusted colleague, and on a personal level I will miss his support and absolute commitment.”
