The low down on ‘smart’ primers

Gone are the days where a simple primer is intended to just set makeup and make it last longer, with the vast variations on the market today, primers are offering so much more.

Introducing, smart primers, the product not solely for superficial needs, yet rather formulated with healing, medicating, and glossifying ingredients.

Makeup artist, Hung Vanngo swears by them, applying them to the faces of Selena Gomez and Emily Ratajkowski when they walk the red carpet.

“It’s for when I can’t be there on set to touch-up, for when I’m not in control,” he said. “These days there are all these primers, for oily skin, for the T-zone, for glowy looks.”

Brands jumping on board include Milk, announcing its newest launch, Hydro Grip Primer, full of hydrating ingredients and hemp-derived cannabis.

Bobbi Brown also offers Primer Plus Hydrating 3-in-1 Setting Spray, that contains chamomile, cucumber, green tea and caffeine help soothe and calm skin, while panthenol and vitamin E help nourish and condition. And within The Body Shop lineup, there is the Tea Tree Pore Minimiser, formulated to treat blemished skin with organic tea tree oil from the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Dermatologist, Ellen Marmur sees multi-purpose primers as a good thing, noting that someone could even skip their typical daytime skincare treatment and use a targeting primer instead.

“I do think the ingredients have gotten to a place where they could be put into primers,” said Marmur. “So why not have a primer that has gotten a bit smarter?”
