How Instagram pushed for the M.A.C x Aaliyah collection

M.A.C has finally released the hotly anticipated M.A.C x Aaliyah collection following three years of petitioning and closely working with the late singer’s family on the line.

More than 25,000 people signed a Change.org petition for M.A.C to create a limited-edition collection inspired by Aaliyah’s music videos, popular looks and makeup bag. The collection consists of four lipsticks, two lip pencils, four lip glosses, an eye palette and a bronzing powder.

“Virtually every single one of our Instagram posts for the past two years leading up to the announcement that we were going to do this collaboration last summer had at least one comment about bringing the Aaliyah collection to life,” M.A.C senior vice president of global communications Catherine Bomboy told WWD.

“We get a lot of consumer requests through our global Instagram and Facebook to bring back products or ideas for collaborations. Of all those consumer requests for collaborations, half of them were related to an Aaliyah collection.”

The products are inspired by Aaliyah songs as well as her place of birth, Brooklyn, and her nickname, Baby Girl. Her family was closely involved with the production process, with her older brother Rashad Haughton bringing M.A.C lipsticks from Aaliyah’s makeup bag to meetings with the cosmetics giant.

The collection will be available to purchase in Australia form July 2.
