beautyheaven appoints new editor

As 2014 draws to a close, beautyheaven is excited to announce that Carli Alman will be taking on the role of editor in the new year. Alman joined the site as an intern in 2010, working her way up from online assistant to content producer and now editor, effective as of January 1, 2015.

"Carli is one of my favourite success stories! She joined beautyheaven originally as an intern, having never worked in publishing, and without the experience of extremely challenging online deadlines,” says Directories Group managing director Jackie Maxted.

“I'm so proud that her hard work, commitment and expertise in the beauty industry has enabled her to grow to the extent that she is now ready to hold her own as editor of Australia's favourite beauty site. I'm really proud of her and the achievements of the entire beautyheaven team."

BD sat down with Alman to get the scoop on her new role and what she has planned for the site in 2015.

How does it feel to be announced as editor of beautyheaven?
I didn’t expect it at all, so it still feels a little surreal - but incredibly exciting. And honestly, I’m proud, too. I’ve worked hard since day one, so it feels like a massive achievement to be able to start 2015 as the editor of beautyheaven.

Can you talk us through your career progression?
I finished uni in November 2009 and started interning at beautyheaven in January 2010. beautyheaven was my first proper journalism internship. I managed to convince Debbie Selikman, who had just started as editor, to let me write a blog every once in a while for the site. In March of the same year, I was hired as the office junior. I mainly did post office runs and picked up groceries, but also dabbled in writing and recruiting for the famous beautyheaven Trial Team. About a year later I was promoted to online assistant, where I got to write a lot more. Then in 2012, I was promoted to content producer, a role which allowed me to focus a lot more on writing both editorial and integrated pieces.

Did you ever imagine that you would one day be editor of the site?
When I arrived 40 minutes late on my first day of interning? Never! I didn’t even think there’d be any kind of job at the end of the internship, let alone a five-year journey that’s led to me being editor. It’s crazy!

What will your role involve?
I’ll be managing and leading the rest of the incredibly talented content team, as well as working on the editorial schedule, creating engaging content, and doing my best to help beautyheaven continue its growth.

What do you hope to achieve in 2015?
I’d really like to explore different ways we can deliver our content. The internet is such a dynamic place, and I’d love beautyheaven to keep up with the pace and be able to engage with our audience in different ways so they come back for more and share our pieces with their own communities.
