Gwyneth Paltrow made headlines in January 2017 when her health and wellness company Goop claimed that inserting a jade egg into your vagina could “help cultivate sexual energy, clear chi pathways in the body, intensify femininity, and invigorate our life force”. The “eggs for your yoni” were also spruiked as hormone balancers and a way to increase your downstairs muscle tone.
Unfortunately for Goop, the claims had no scientific corroboration and now the site has been successfully sued by the California Food, Drug and Medical Device Task Force over the egg’s claims.
The lawsuit brought against Paltrow’s Goop has resulted in the business needing to hand over AU$200,000 in civil penalties. Speaking on the result, Santa Clara County district attorney, Jeff Rosen, said: “The health and money of Santa Clara County residents should never be put at risk by misleading advertising.
“We will vigilantly protect consumers against companies that promise health benefits without the support of good science... or any science.”
This news comes after Paltrow revealed the reason for Goop leaving it’s Condé Nast print deal. The publishing giant wanted Paltrow to hire fact checkers when she “didn’t understand the problem” with allowing health recommendations to go un-fact-checked.
