Instagram reveals screenshot alerts for stories

Instagram stalking just became far less subtle with the introduction of screenshot alerts.

Instagram, as of this week, will now be alerting people when someone has captured a screenshot of their story. A shutter symbol will appear next to the name of the user who has screengrabbed, making stalking exes and influencers far less subtle.

The development takes a leaf out of Snapchat’s book as the app also alerts users when someone has taken a screenshot.

According to a statement made to TechCrunch, an Instagram spokesperson said the feature is just a trial.

The statement read: "We are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you."

Users included in the test are getting a warning that the next time they take a screenshot of a friend’s story the friend will be able to see it; however, there are concerns that the trial could harm engagement with less people willing to watch stories over time if creators are notified of screenshots.
