Revealed: most talked about topics online in 2017

As 2017 draws to a close, we get to look back on the year and remember what got our pulses (and keyboards) racing. With auspol, #metoo and marriage equality all lighting up on social media, the biggest indicator of what were the most talked-about points of the year is Facebook and Twitter’s year in review.

Today, both Facebook and Twitter revealed data about the most-talked about topics in Australia for 2017, and while Twitter was skewed more towards politics, Facebook users preferred to discuss tragedy, sport and music.

"This year, International Women’s Day was the most talked about topic on the platform,” notes Facebook’s director of policy for Australia and New Zealand, Mia Garlick, “with conversation driven by the Women's March, which ranked in the top ten global list, as well as the #metoo movement.”

Meanwhile on Twitter, marriage equality and #auspol were the most discussed topics (and the most frequently used hashtags); however, #bts managed to sneak into the top ten, which Korean pop band BTS should be thrilled about.
