Snapchat have this week launched world lenses, a new twist on its popular face filters and a that move helps progress the company's exploration of augmented reality.
Users can now tap the camera screen and while using the rear facing camera, can choose from a selection of 3D lenses. A cloud, rainbow, flowers and a floating "OMG" are included in the initial lineup however these are expected to change daily.
After selecting the 3D lens, it can be moved around the screen to be placed. Once placed, the app behaves as if the object exists in the real world, for example; walking closer to it will make it appear bigger. The feature is different from the usual Snapchat 3D stickers which are flat objects that are pinned after the image is captured.
The launch comes in the same week that Facebook held its F8 developer conference where Mark Zuckerberg revealed his vision for an AR future. He sees AR as a new platform and will be opening up its AR capabilities to developers who will be able to build and distribute AR filters to Facebook users.
While Snapchat currently appear to be a step ahead when it comes to AR, it will enevitably have a challenge on its hands if Facebook decide to launch a developer driven AR platform.
