Clarins announces initiative for sustainable fragrances

In an aim to meet increasingly strict environmental and social requirements, Clarins Fragrance Group has announced its involvement in a program aimed at delivering sustainable alcohol for use in fragrances.

The parent company of brands including Thierry Mugler and Azzaro have “been working on the idea for three years now”, Clarins Fragrance Group president Sandrine Groslier explained to WWD.

In order to ecologically produce sugar beets destined for alcohol production, Clarins has teamed with the Remnicourt farm in France’s Amifontaine region to create a balanced ecosystem at the site of production, which works to protect and regenerate the environment. “The goals are to promote biodiversity and positive interactions between agriculture and nature, as well as reestablish an ecosystem that balances itself in a natural, intelligent way”, a spokesperson from Clarins said. The company is expecting both short and long term benefits of the biodiversity initiative.

Grolier explained: “at the end of the day, we are doing something good for the planet, and also the ecosystem and even for the economy. It’s not green washing. It is really a vision we have had since the beginning," which illustrated the initiative’s link with the groups core messaging.
