Major company moves towards sustainability

Palm oil is an ingredient utilised in everything from cooking to cosmetics, but its contribution to deforestation is often what makes the headlines. In an effort to support growing environmental awareness, the world’s second largest palm oil producer has announced a partnership with The Forest Trust.

Indonesian-based Golden Agri-Resources has agreed to partner with the renowned environmental expert group to improve its sustainability. The company is proving that sustainability of the product is possible, launching a Peat EcoSystem Rehabilitation Project in Borneo.

Golden Agri-Resources MD of sustainability and strategic stakeholder engagement Agus Purnomo says the move is an essential one if palm oil is to remain a popular ingredient. “Indonesia needs solutions to the pressing issues of climate change, forest loss and fire. Through our social and environmental policy and our commitment to peat rehabilitation, GAR is demonstrating that economic development and environmental protection can go hand-in-hand. We will continue to call for and support change across Indonesia and the industry to achieve sustainable palm oil.”
