AAFW backstage report: MECCA X bassike

MECCA X bassike backstage report - Wednesday May 11, 2022

bassike, known for its commitment to design led and sustainably and ethically made wardrobe essentials, revealed its Resort 23 collection at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week with a film presentation, inspired by the Great Barrier Reef and captured on location at Hamilton Island.

The collection was inspired by the diversity of the species that make up the reef and the way they interact with each other. The bold and clashing colours and textures in the collection echo the way our environment naturally generates pattern and colour palettes whilst a print the features the sprawling tentacles of an octopus gliding through the water punctuates the collection for a true resort feel.

The makeup:

The bassike beauty brief was around celebrating each model’s natural beauty by working with their features to create a soft, natural look that worked with the environment and carefully complimented the collection.

Molly Warkentin, makeup director working with MECCA for bassike’s Resort 23 collection, wanted the skin kept soft and sheer, celebrating each of the three model’s natural complexions.

"The skin had a satin finish complimented by a soft shadow. Using creams to shape the face for a barely there look, the complexion was complete using creams to subtly highlight the high points of the face," she said. "Brows were filled in where sparse, replicating single hairs for the most natural finish, topped off with a clear brow gel for hold."

"Lashes were lightly curled, with a lick of black mascara added to the top lashes only. Lips were exfoliated and hydrated with lip balm."

Molly explained that each beauty look in the bassike Resort 23 collection, slightly differed and drew inspiration from elements of their surrounds.

"Alana’s look was inspired by the soft tones of the sky around the Island as the sun sets. So I created a soft wash of terracotta around her eyes in a halo effect."

"Danielle’s look was created to capture how the face may appear after a day in the sun on the island. Blush was kept to the apples of the cheeks to give a wind burnt finish that was subtle and translucent."

"Jordan’s look embodied an evening spent on the Island. Eyes were defined using a black kohl pencil, lining the inner and outer corners of the eyes only, leaving the centre clean."

When asked what beauty trends she believed would come out of AAFW and into 22, Molly explained, "mirrored by where fashion is headed, and as seen in the bassike resort 23 collection – I think we are going to see people having fun with their makeup looks."

"Think Euphoria. Embellished faces with gems and holographic materials in interesting shapes. It’s not for everyone, but incorporating metallics is a safer option to ease into the trend. Bronzes, golds, and silvers can be used as both subtle accents or bold statements on the eyes."
