It’s not every day you see a 1.8 tonne, 14-metre frying pan lying around on the sand - but that’s exactly what you’ll come across if you venture to Tamarama Beach over the next few weeks.
Sydney artist Andrew Hankin partnered with SunSense to install the giant We’re Fryin’ Out Here” sculpture as part of the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The idea came to Hankin when he saw how many people go to the beach to cook” themselves.
The sculpture is asking people to stop and think about the damaging effects of the sun, which range from burnt skin to long-term health risks.
For Hankin, teaming up with SunSense was a natural fit and integral to getting his message across.
I wanted to create a sculpture with a message and saw this as an opportunity to raise awareness about the effects the sun has on our skin.
It’s incredibly important to have the support of SunSense to bring this message to life. SunSense believe strongly in the importance of sun protection and all their sunscreens are Australian made and owned. There’s no brand we’d rather have on board because the message behind the sculpture and the philosophy of SunSense are so well linked.
I really wanted to create something that would stick in people’s minds long after the exhibition is gone. I hope the name and more importantly the message behind the sculpture will have that effect.”
SunSense will have a team on site handing out sunscreen to visitors of Sculpture by the Sea on November 1 and November 8.
