bdBLOG: Male grooming falling short

Men may have upped the stakes when it comes to male grooming, but they still have a long way to go.

Recent research found 9 in 10 men aged over 18 use some sort of grooming product, which includes facial and body skin care, shaving, hair care and fragrance, according to NPD’s Men’s Grooming Consumer Report.

While these stats are impressive, the report also found only one quarter of the men participating in the study use facial skincare products such as cleansers (excluding bar soap), lotions/moisturisers, lip products, acne treatment products, exfoliators, eye products, anti-ageing serums/treatments and toner. Not so impressive.

There is a feeling that facial skincare products are not needed unless you have a specific skin problem such as acne,” NPD vice president and senior global industry analyst Karen Grant told CosmeticsDesign. For men to use a product, he first must be aware that there is an underlying need that requires addressing.”

Come on men, haven’t you ever heard of prevention rather than remedy?!

So while the men’s facial skin care market may have grown 11 per cent in dollar sales in 2011 compared to the year before, they’re still continuing to fall way short in comparison to their female counterparts when it comes to looking after the health of their skin.
