2011 RAFW: Gail Sorronda

Who: Gail Sorronda

When: 7:30pm, May 2. The Opt, Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Inspiration: "Minimalism with a point of difference. Futuristic, organic and feminine. Fluidity and creating order out of chaos. Simplicity and strength. She's kooky, as in playful, with a sense of humour."

Hair: Brad Ngata for L'Oreal

Hair style: "What we're doing at Gail Sorronda this year is it's all about 90s minimalism, so we're working with the girls' natural texture. Through the top section we're using Root Lift and we're spraying that from the roots to the mid lengths, blow drying that in, and what that will give me is a chalky texture. From the mid-lengths down, we're just leaving it free of product and we're going to iron that. The hair becomes quite fat and then it becomes quite skinny. We're going to have a middle part and the hair's going to be pulled back and instead of tying it off like a traditional pony-tail at the back at the nape, we're tying it around the neck and keeping the back of the hair quite flat. So when the girls are face on, it will just look like a very austere minimal hair pulled back, but when they turn around you'll see that the natural hair is down. It's a little bit quirky and quite minimal," says Brad Ngata.

Make-up: Napoleon Perdis for Napoleon and Napoleon National Creative team leader Kate Squires

Make-up style: "The look for Gail's show this year is about minimalism but with a point of difference. She wanted something that was a bit of a contrast between futuristic and organic but was still beautiful and feminine. It's about simplicity but it still has a real strength to it. She wants the girls to have that kookiness to them, but they know how to have fun, but they still have a newness about them as well. To relate it to the collection and to the hair as well, Brad Ngata for L'Oreal is using long white bobby pins, we've used our China Doll gel eyeliner in Alabaster to give a white line across the brows. It is a white gel liner which sets, it's got that artistic edge to it. It's kind of like the girl's done it herself and just gotten a paint brush and done two really clean straight lines across her brows. Using the tone of white keeps it quite organic but the straight lines and working against the normal structure of the face gives it that futuristic edge," says Kate Squires.

"The eyebrow statement is artistic and painterly, rather than Oriental. Think of it as a brush stroke," says Napoleon Perdis.
