L’Oreal to launch AI-powered customisable beauty device

In the recently concluded tech innovation convention CES 2020, L’Oreal unveiled Perso – an at-home system designed to give users a personalised skincare and cosmetics experience with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The device was developed by the L’Oreal Technology Incubator and comes in a sleek 6.5 inches-high packaging. The device uses a four-step process to deliver optimised skincare and makeup formulas that increase in personalisation over time.

Nicolas Hieronimus, deputy chief executive officer at L’Oreal, said that the product was created to meet consumers’ increasing needs for smart beauty products and services that offer near-limitless personalisation and precision.

"We are committed to making L'Oréal the leader in Beauty Tech – and Perso is the next step in that exciting journey,” added Hieronimus.

The four-step process of Perso begins with the product’s mobile app where users take a photo of their face. Using AI technology, varying skin concerns are identified like wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and the like.

The device then proceeds to assess the local environmental condition (i.e. weather, temperature, pollen, UV index, and humidity) to determine how it may influence the skin’s condition.

Following this, users are prompted to enter their personal skin concerns in the app including fine lines, dark spots, pigmentation, pore size, radiance and dullness. There is also an option to include skin texture and hydration levels to further the formula of moisturiser, serum, and under-eye cream.

The data is finally collected to inform the creation of a customised skincare formula, which is then dispensed in a portioned single dose at the top of the device. For those after a larger dose, a detachable mirrored top is available in the device. Morning and evening application is also adjusted by the technology.

Perso is expected to launch in 2021 in partnership with a yet to be revealed L’Oreal skincare brand.
