Nanotechnology in sunscreen debate heats up

As the controversy surrounding nanoparticles once again hits the media, Banana Boat is reiterating that its products contain no nanoparticles.

Friends of Earth have this week launched ACCC complaints against two companies, accusing them of misleading and deceptive conduct in the marketing of nano sunscreen ingredients.

All ingredients used in Banana Boat sunscreens sold in Australia are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and have been deemed safe for consumers.

While Banana Boat sunscreens do not contain nanoparticles (i.e. particles smaller than 100 nanometres in size), they contain micronized Zinc Oxide. These are larger particles that do not penetrate the outer layer of the skin.

"Banana Boat Australia works closely with the Therapeutic Goods Administration to ensure each and every Banana Boat product is safe for consumers to use everyday as a form of protection from UVA and UVB rays,” says Banana Boat senior brand manager Anna Webster.

We will continue to work closely with the TGA to ensure all Banana Boat products are safe, effective and of the best quality possible."
