What’s the story behind this $75,000 Olaplex lawsuit?

Confused by the recent Olaplex drama? You’re not alone. Between the Reddit threads, statements from the brand and snippets of the lawsuit being released online, the already-tangled web is becoming increasingly hairy.

In a nutshell: users of Olaplex are taking the popular haircare brand to court with claims of hair loss, skin sensitivities and breakage. A far cry from anything we’ve previously heard or experienced from a brand designed to rebuild and repair hair.

As it stands, 28 people are taking Olaplex to court in California seeking $75,000 in damages which include scalp blistering, hair loss, breakage and thinning.

Olaplex is denying all claims made against them.

What is Olaplex?

Olaplex is a haircare range that uses bond-building proteins to strengthen and repair hair.

Although it initially launched as an in-salon-only range, Olaplex eventually released a selection of at-home products.

The range (which includes shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatments, masks and oils) are known as the gold standard for strengthening and restoring damaged or weak hair.

Fast-forward to 2023, however, and the Google search results for ‘Olaplex’ are painting a drastically different picture.

Though, as we continue to see time and time again, what always follows cult-status stardom? Lawsuits. No, dupes, we mean dupes!

What is the lawsuit against Olaplex?

As per the lawsuit, claims of false advertising and negligence are being made against Olaplex. The group (which is currently sitting at 28 people) believe that ingredients within the Olaplex products contain allergens and irritants which are responsible for their subsequent hair loss, skin conditions and poor hair quality.

What have Olaplex said in response to these claims?

Olaplex are rejecting all claims made against them as they continue to keep products on the market. In a video shared to the brand’s Instagram account, CEO JuE Wong directly responded to the upcoming lawsuit. Her overarching message? There’s nothing to worry about.

“I’m here today to address some misinformation about our brand which I know is stressful and concerning for our customers,” she said.

“You may have recently heard that Olaplex products cause hair loss. This is a painful and emotional topic. However, for our products, this is not true. Olaplex products do not cause hair loss or hair breakage.”

“We have released the test results from independent third-party laboratories so you can see this for yourself,” she offered up for those wanting to investigate further.

JuE signed off by saying, “I believe in the safety and efficacy of our products. For more information, please visit our website, thank you and bye.”

Which Olaplex products have been recalled?

None, as it stands no products have been recalled by Olaplex.
