The most skin-confident countries revealed

The way people feel about their skin is wide ranging and extreme. Many feel incredibly self-conscious about the way their skin looks, others consider it their greatest feature and thousands probably don't think about it at all. But what about as a collective? Are there some populations that have greater skin confidence than others? Clarisonic set out to find the answer to these questions and more with its latest survey that looks specifically at how people feel about the skin they're in.

The survey was conducted online among thousands of adults in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, China, South Korea and Japan and results revealed that Canada was the most skin-confident country surveyed.

The confidence was measured by the people who reported they were "proud to show off their skin without anything on it". After Canada at 28 per cent came the US (27 per cent) followed by the UK (25 per cent), Germany (22 per cent), China and France (20 per cent), South Korea (12 per cent) and Japan (10 per cent). Globally, women and men appeared to have equal levels of skin confidence (both 20 per cent), but overall skin confidence is relatively low across all of the countries surveyed.

Other results included the percentage of adults that agreed they feel more confident when their skin is clear and healthy-looking. The individual country rankings are:

1. China (53 per cent)
2. The US (32 per cent)
3. Canada and the UK (31 per cent)
4. Germany (29 per cent)
5. South Korea (28 per cent)
6. France (26 per cent)
7. Japan (19 per cent)

Forty-three per cent of global adults who use social media admit to using photo editing apps and filters to improve photos of themselves before posting. The most likely countries to artificially enhance their photos are:

1. South Korea (79 per cent)
2. China (65 per cent)
3. Canada (29 per cent)
4. The US (23 per cent)

The top reasons why photo editing apps and filters are used include to hide blemishes, acne and/or uneven skin tone (19 per cent), and to remove wrinkles or to look younger (14 per cent).

The most desired beauty wish was also revealed. When asked to pick between a toned body, beautiful teeth, perfect skin or great hair, the people of South Korea showed a clear preference for perfect skin (34 per cent) over everything else. Adults in China (21 per cent) and Japan (20 per cent) placed perfect skin as second to a toned body (53 per cent versus 46 per cent, respectively).
