In the last 50 years, the prevalence of this skin disease has doubled, with a huge 33 per cent of Australians now inflicted with it. That’s right, eczema might not be a sexy topic, but it is a widespread one.
For those who suffer from eczema, dry skin isn’t an affliction, but rather a curse. The uncomfortable condition is common, and one that French skincare company La Roche-Posay is dedicated to help alleviate. In response to the rise in people suffering from it, the brand has recently launched Lipikar Baume AP+, a new addition to its Lipikar range.
The Lipikar collection is now 20 years old, formulated in the La Roche-Posay labs to address dry skin in both adults and children. Joining its ranks, the Lipikar Baume AP+ is a lipid-replenishing balm that helps to soothe dry, irritated skin prone to itching, and is especially suitable for those dealing with eczema. Symptoms present themselves as legions on the skin and include dryness, scaly patches, moderate to severe itching, redness and swelling.
But what causes eczema? Unfortunately, it’s linked to the body’s natural ecosystem, meaning certain people cannot avoid it. “Research has shown that there is a link between the skin’s bacterial ecosystem and eczema flares. For example, people with eczema have a poor balance of microbes,” says La Roche-Posay scientific communications and education manager Rachel McAdam.
While eczema cannot be prevented, it can be managed with products such as the Lipikar Baume AP+. The Lipikar Baume AP+ works by re-establishing and stabilising the microbiome balance in the body, while preserving the skin barrier. As McAdams lists the benefits of its key ingredients: “Shea butter, glycerin and dimethicone help to support the barrier function, niacinamide calms and soothes the itch and swelling, and Aqua Posae Filiformis targets the imbalance in the ecosystem.”
For McAdams, there are three key reasons why the moisturiser can help to soothe suffering related to eczema. “It replenishes the good fats that are often deficient in eczema skin, which in turn strengthens the skin’s barrier, helps to reduce the itch, redness and swelling, and balances the skin’s bacterial ecosystem,” she says.
Considering that eczema develops in those as young as three months old, the uncomfortable skin condition can be a nightmare for newborns and new mothers alike. The entire range of La Roche-Posay’s Lipikar creations are sensitive enough to be used on sufferers of all ages.
