The anti-ageing product lending a helping hand

Keeping the skin on your face hydrated is vital when it comes to age prevention, but not many consumers know that the same goes for their hands. A survey conducted in the UK earlier this year revealed that dry hands can age us by nine years on average, while non-dry hands were perceived to be younger than their age 56 per cent of the time.

Ageing hands will tend to show wrinkles and uneven pigmentation, this is due to reduced collagen production, again, much like on our faces. But when these symptoms show prematurely, it's time to take action.

Along with lack of moisture, exposure to sun, harsh environment and chemicals can also expedite the ageing process in our hands, according to Dermal Therapy group technical manager Amit Saha. Protection from external factors that cause drying are key, and this is where an ever-trustful hand cream comes in.

Saha advises that a cream with an intensive moisturiser, not just a barrier, is used. Like Dermal Therapy's Anti-Ageing Hand Balm, it should be clinically proven and fast acting.

"In addition it should have a protection element in the formula not just emollient," Saha says, "And finally if you want to have anti-ageing benefit from a hand cream, it should have a clinically proven active ingredient and minimum SPF 15."

In Dermal Therapy's case, the Anti-Ageing Hand Balm contain Plantago Lanceolata Leaf Extract, a unique plant based ingredient that helps to improve skin elasticity as well as lighten age spots and pigmentation. It is also fortified with SPF 15 to provide protection from harmful UV rays from the sun. A cream like this is designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well as moisturise and protect the skin on the hands.

So how exactly does the Dermal Therapy Anti-Ageing Hand Balm work?

- It boosts the skin's support structures like collagen and elastin
- It limits enzymes like proteases that dimities support structures like collagen and elastin
- These in turn improve skin's wrinkles and elasticity
- It restores the homeostatis of skin, limits hyperpigmentation and skin's luminosity

The Anti-Ageing Hand Balm should be used in the day time to maximise the benefits of the added SPF.
