The next digital beauty concept making waves

Having hitched a ride on the digital wave, crowdfunding is a concept that has been gaining momentum over the past few years, with young inventors embracing it as a launch pad.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, crowdfunding is “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the Internet”.

While this is more often associated with films and left-of-centre inventions, crowdfunding has helped to finance a number of new beauty innovations. Here, BD takes a look at three that are set to impress:

The Pearl
A sleek compact mirror, The Pearl also acts as a USB charger. Successfully launched on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the double-purpose compact has enough power to charge an iPhone twice over if necessary.

ClickStick
The techno-savvy deodorant, ClickStick, incorporates an applicator that dispenses the precise amount of deodorant needed. The refillable device was launched on Kickstarter by two doctoral students studying mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University in the US.

Tio
Tio is an eco-friendly toothbrush developed by industrial designers and forged from eco-friendly bioplastic materials. The clever design of the brush is based around reducing waste - with the packaging doubling as a travel case, and a replaceable head included.
