You can now buy halal nail polish

American nail brand Orly has collaborated with Muslim lifestyle blog MuslimGirl to create a collection of halal-certified nail polish.

The need for halal nail varnish stems from traditional polishes conflicting with the Islamic practice of wudhu. Wudhu is a cleansing ritual that takes place before prayer, and it includes washing of the hands. Non-porous polish acts as a barrier between the water and the nails, as the water must wash over all areas. This breathable polish offers a solution to Muslims who couldn’t previously paint their nails for that reason.

Available in six colours, the polishes each have tongue-in-cheek names such as “What the Fatima?” and “Haram-Bae”.

Speaking on the collection, MuslimGirl’s chief of staff Azmia Magane said: “This line is important because there are so many girls and young women who aren’t represented in mainstream beauty. They either don’t fit that definition, or see things about them that are designed without them, instead of for them and by them. This is our way of bridging that gap.”

The move is a significant one, as the under-represented halal beauty market is expected to reach $US52 billion in worth by 2025.
