If you’ve been perusing through TikTok lately, you would know that the latest trend to take the platform by storm is the “under painting” makeup technique. The method, which has been around for years, recently resurfaced thanks to celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips, who is responsible for glamming it girls Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber.
Turns out, their flawless base isn’t just genetics, and a lot of it has to do with Phillips applying cream contour and highlighting products before the actual foundation. Typically, contour, highlight and blush is the last step in one's makeup routine but when doing the under painting technique, the three are applied heavily on bare skin.
Once the cream products are blended out, foundation is then buffed on to the face using a fluffy brush. This results in a natural, diffused base that is free from harsh lines.
We may not have the budget to afford Mary Phillips, but that doesn’t mean we can’t recreate the look ourselves. Here are the products you will need when attempting the under painting technique.

STEP 1: Apply concealer on the high points of the face and under the eyes
