Formally the domain of the three am dancefloor, pick-up lines are now flying around faster than Usain Bolt in a Puma advertisement. But while the dating world has been opened up to dizzy new heights thanks to the launch of social media apps such as Tinder, so has the need to impress at all times of the day (and night).
Always making sure men are at the top of their game, is helping ensure they are dominating in the dating world by interviewing over 1,000 Australian single women aged 18-29 on their dating habits.
The Clear Effect Study conducted by Galaxy research found that 87 per cent of young Australian women check out a guy’s social media profile before going on a date, with women aged 18 - 22 being the most likely to check out their prospective new mate online (91 per cent).
Despite the launch of Tinder, Facebook was seen as the most popular social media site for checking out a potential mate (94 per cent). When checking out a potential partner’s prospects, women are looking for whether they have healthy skin (80 per cent), if they already have a girlfriend (81 per cent), what their occupation is (74 per cent), and if they have a good physique (42 per cent). Major turn-offs were found to be the guy having women draped all over them (81 per cent), naked photos (80 per cent), and drunk pics (67 per cent).
But making the cut with potential suitors isn’t the only thing men have to make sure of with their social media profiles, they also need to impress the woman’s friends. The study found 84 per cent of women have shown their friends a picture of a prospective first date to get a second opinion before accepting the offer.
It was also discovered that Tinder users are the most likely to check a guy’s social media profile before agreeing to go on a first date and to seek a second opinion. A further 58 per cent of Tinder users are likely to go online to check out the bodies of the guys they are considering dating.
No stranger to the dating scene, The Bachelor’s Ali Oetjen says, I know that my girlfriends would definitely check out a guy online before going on a date with him. I often give advice to my besties before they say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It’s so easy to find out a lot about a guy just by looking online. You have to be careful about the image you’re putting out there.”
