In the last 12 months, the word “hyperpigmentation” has been a buzzword in beauty circles, and there’s little wonder why - it’s one of the leading signs of aged skin. But what is hyperpigmentation and why has it become one of the top skincare concerns for the modern woman?
education manager Emma Hobson sat down with BD to clear up the confusion about hyperpigmentation and explain what dermalogica is doing to treat it.
What is hyperpigmentation?
It is the overproduction of the skin pigment, melanin, which causes various forms of skin discolouration.
Who does it affect?
It can affect anyone, except people who suffer from albinism.
Why is there an increased demand from consumers for products addressing hyperpigmentation?
The very first and obvious sign of ageing is not actually a wrinkle, but uneven skin tone and pigmentation spots. We therefore all aspire to have skin clarity as it makes us look younger for longer. The brighter and more luminous the skin, the more youthful the appearance.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Pigmentation is caused by numerous things, with the number one trigger being sun (UV) exposure. It can also be the result of hormonal imbalance from things like acne, stress, pregnancy and taking the contraceptive pill. Other medications, such as antibiotics, can also trigger it, along with the use of artificial fragrance on the skin from products such as perfume (which make the skin more photosensitive). Trauma to and inflammation of the skin can also lead to discolouration.
Is it a bigger issue today than in the past?
Yes, for two reasons. Firstly, there is a global trend for products and treatments that help fight the ageing process. Secondly, developments in ingredient and treatment technology are allowing for much more effective, faster, tangible results.
How do you treat hyperpigmentation?
The success of treating hyperpigmentation largely depends on the cause. Hyperpigmentation caused by UV rays or injury tends to respond well to treatment - if caught early - while scarring and other hormonal influences are more difficult to tackle.
To combat pigmentation, first you need to try and avoid the triggers, then adopt a good treatment program. Skin lightening/brightening products containing active ingredients primarily act as melanin suppressors, and can effectively lighten skin and even out skin tone.
Effective treatment takes time and patience. Use products and get treatments over the course of several weeks or months, and apply a high SPF sunscreen every day - this is critical.
Can you tell us about the launch of dermalogica PowerBrightTRx™?
It’s been a very exciting time for dermalogica bringing these three great formulas to market. The Australian consumer is driving a heavy demand for highly active, results-driven home care products that are solving skin discolouration issues and getting rid of the tell-tale signs of premature ageing.
Why did the brand decide to launch the product range?
We felt it necessary to keep pace with consumer demand for powerful brightening products to offset hyperpigmentation, dark spots and signs of premature ageing. The new emerging technology of some incredibly active cosmeceutical ingredients allowed us to create powerful formulas that would deliver the results consumers are seeking, while ensuring skin health is never compromised.
How does it address hyperpigmentation?
We use a streamlined approach to treating hyperpigmentation with the beneficial ‘layering’ of active complexes to optimise results. All three products contain a different mix of active ingredients allowing us to use much higher concentrations than if we put the ingredients in one formula. When utilised together, we achieve advanced brightening results by targeting and interrupting the various stages (pathways) of the production of the pigment melanin.
What are the benefits of the PowerBrightTRx™ system?
PowerBrightTRx™ works on the treatment as well as the prevention of hyperpigmentation by evening out skin tone, reducing hyperpigmentation and improving skin texture. It has been proven to lighten hyperpigmented skin across a diverse group of skin types and skin colour.
What makes the dermalogica hyperpigmentation range work better than its competitors?
dermalogica’s 30-plus years of being the leading education providers for the professional skincare industry, combined with the company’s research and development arm of the company - The International Dermal Institute - has given the brand unparalleled knowledge of the latest ingredient technology and research. It has also provided a global perspective of what exactly it is the consumer of the day needs and wants.
How does this new range fit in with the whole dermalogica philosophy?
PowerBrightTRx™ has been developed to work synergistically and alongside a wide variety of dermalogica products to suit customers’ individual concerns. They are developed with the company’s commitment to our product protocols: no artificial fragrance or colour, no comedogenic ingredients, no mineral oil, no SD alcohol, and no animal testing.
