Vlogging tips from Oz’s YouTube stars

‘Vloggers’. Once a strange, baffling term, vlogging has now become mainstream, with some vloggers becoming famous in their own right. Few could have predicted the popularity of video blogging, with the industry burgeoning at a staggering rate.

But vlogging is an art form and not every channel is guaranteed to be a success story. To help those who are eager to get their vlogging off the ground, BD asked some of Australia’s beauty vlogging superstars for their top tips.

“My best advice is to pay attention to detail. Make sure your lighting works well with what you're trying to show off, make your background attractive and relevant to your content, and make sure your sound is clear. From there, it's all about making your content interesting and keeping your audience's attention. Stalk your analytics page and learn what content your audience likes to see from you so you can create more of it!” - Rachael Brooks of TheRachaelBrook

“Practice speaking in front of your camera. It can feel really awkward when you start filming for the first time and this can be picked up by your viewers. You have to be comfortable and confident when presenting, and this comes with practice.” - Ruby Golani of Ruby Golani

“K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple, Stupid). Keep your video focused, direct, and as short as possible. There's nothing worse than watching a 15-minute video for something that should only take two minutes to do. Viewers can get bored easy, so make the most of your video in a short period of time.” - Katrina Maree of Infectious Beauty

“Have decent quality video and audio. I'm not saying you need to go out and spend your life savings on professional equipment - natural lighting works wonders, especially with lower range cameras. And try to remove any consistent background noises. If it's hard for people to see or hear you, they're probably not going to stick around!” - Katerina Williams of Katerina Beauty Blog

“Stay up-to-date with the latest trends both online and offline. YouTube is the second biggest search engine after Google, and people are starting to use YouTube a lot more. So be aware of what you are naming your videos, as well as how you market your content once it has gone live.” - Domenica Calarco of Vogue Vandal Beauty

“My number one tip for vlogging and creating content would be to create original content that is natural to you, and always have a smile on your face!” - Brittney Lee Saunders of Brittney Lee Saunders

“Have good lighting, whether it be natural or studio lighting. Your viewers need to be able to see the products you're showing and how they are applied.” - Mel Phillips of Tango2+

“Organisation is key, as well as persistency. Be nice and kind, and help to inspire others." - Lilian Tahmasian of Butterfliielilian

“Make sure your content is appealing and relevant to your audience. Then do some research to find out what types of videos are currently out there on the same topic - this will help you to think of ways to make your video stand out and different from the rest.” - Tina Yong of Make up by Tina Yong

“Be yourself. Relax and enjoy making the videos. Viewers want to see your true personality, so don’t be shy! The viewers won’t bite.” - Cartia Mallan of Carty186

"It's important to upload regularly and invest in good equipment. I definitely think I could have experienced faster growth in my channel if I had planned ahead and set it all up before even starting, so if you can do that; buy a camera, lighting, design a great website etc, all before you begin, do it!" - Chloe Morello of Chloe Morello
