Doctors urge states to follow NSW solarium ban

The Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia (CPSA) has welcomed the NSW State Government’s decision to introduce a ban on sun beds and tanning booths across the state. CPSA is now urging other state governments to follow suit.

Dr Mary Dingley, spokesperson for the CPSA says the ban on tanning beds is long overdue. It is fantastic that the NSW Government has introduced this ban. It sends the message that for many there is no form of ‘safe sun tanning’ and will hopefully encourage people to rethink the idea of a ‘healthy tan’.” Dr Dingley says the ban is a positive step that will potentially save lives.

The CPSA also has its sights set on laser and IPL regulation, campaigning for tighter regulations on the use of these devices. Anyone can pick up a laser device and open up shop,” Dr Dingley says. In some cases, beauty therapists with no idea of what they may be dealing with have used these devices on melanomas, which can change their appearance and delay diagnosis, with potentially fatal results.”

According to the announcement by NSW environment minister Robyn Parker, all tanning beds in NSW will be banned from 2014.
