The most popular health foods of 2015

Once the domain of health nuts, superfoods are now fixtures on the wellbeing scene - with new (and newly rediscovered) ones emerging all the time. Google Trends has now confirmed the health foods that are ‘having a moment’ and rising in popularity in 2015.

Acai
High in antioxidants and fibre, this berry from Brazil is a staple in breakfast bowls in Bondi and beyond. The berry aroused interest in January 2009, when its international export started to surge. Now, the acai bowl is much more popular than the berry in its original form, leading the term to hit its highest peak in popularity in June of this year.

Matcha
Originally a drink favoured by the samurai, matcha or matcha tea is an antioxidant-rich drink that boosts metabolism, burns calories and detoxifies the body. Its popularity rose in January 2014, and peaked in April of this year.

Turmeric
The vibrant spice from Southeast Asia is gaining momentum, with Google Trends predicting it will peak later this year. Having been on the health food radar since 2012, turmeric is known for benefiting skin, delaying diabetes, and fighting cancer and heart attacks.

Coconut oil
The ‘coco’ craze is set to continue, largely thanks to consumers becoming more aware of the many benefits of coconut oil. These include stress relief, cholesterol maintenance, weight loss, and digestion assistance. The oil has actually peaked a number of times, in March 2012, March 2014, and again in April 2015.

Vegan cheese
Dairy alternatives are rising in popularity, and vegan cheese is a commonly searched term. It is formulated from nuts and other plant foods and first peaked in April 2012, maintaining popularity ever since.
