Candles for change continue to spark global interest

In June, we reported Illumina Soy Candles was set to collaborate with Downlights, a candlemaking business created by Emma Sykes who has Down Syndrome. Since then, the heart-warming story has developed, continuing to spark national and international interest.

The idea for Downlights came after Tony Sykes, Emma’s father, couldn’t find work for his daughter. He thought starting their own business would create new opportunities for Emma and help her become more independent. This led to Illumina coming on board, and with founder Jennifer Del Bel’s guidance; it has become a fully-fledged venture.

The story has been shared on Babble (Disney’s parenting website), Stuff, Seven Sharp, NZ Herald, and The AM Show. A piece was also created by social news and entertainment copmany Everhance, which was shared on George Takei’s (known for his role in Star Trek) Facebook page and currently has over 1.4 million views.

Now, a 30 minute documentary is being produced about Emma and she is a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year at the Attitude Awards, a national televised event celebrating the achievements of New Zealanders living with disabilities.

Jennifer says she has seen Emma grow in independence, smile and speak more, and learn new skills. She adds Illumina hopes to expand its facilities and employ between 10 and 20 people with Down Syndrome.
