LUSH kicks off transgender visibility campaign

To bring visibility to the discrimination and dangers transgender people face every day, LUSH Cosmetics is launching a 7-day national campaign during Transgender Awareness Week, kicking off today.

Starting November 13, the cosmetics and campaigning company aims to raise $10,000 for organisations fighting for transgender support and rights in New Zealand.

Today LUSH releases a limited edition Inner Truth Bath Melt ($9.90) in shops and online, with 100 per cent of the product sales (minus the taxes) donated directly to RainbowYOUTH and InsideOUT organisations supporting the trans community.

LUSH Australia and New Zealand campaign manager, Ariahne Thompson says, “As a business that champions equality and has actively campaigned alongside the LGBTQIA+ community for many years, we recognise that people who are transgender often face disproportionately high rates of discrimination.

“Our aim is to stand in solidarity with the community and provide education on how individuals can become stronger, louder allies and build an inclusive and accepting society for all.”

To elevate the visibility of the transgender community, all shop windows across New Zealand will display #TransRightsNow.

In addition, the brand will distribute more than 2,000 “How to be a trans ally” resource booklets to help guide cisgender people in becoming better allies – available in all LUSH stores in New Zealand and to download on nz.lush.com.

RainbowYOUTH communications manager, Toni Duder says, “In today’s climate, it’s crucial that we have all parts of our communities helping to send a message of diversity and equality.

“LUSH’s support means that we can show the visibility of our transgender and gender diverse communities all around Aotearoa.”

InsideOUT will use funds to increase the number of schools they can support through creating safe and inclusive environments for trans students. Funds will support RainbowYOUTH in providing increased visibility to the transgender community through campaign work and education.

The campaign coincides with Transgender Awareness Week (12-19 November) and will finish on Transgender Day of Remembrance (20 November).
