The summer hair tips & trends you need to know

If there were ever a time to consider switching up your hair look, it's summer. To survive sweltering weather and beach days, you'll want a cut that is decidedly low-maintenance, but, if you’re keen for a change - long fringes are making a comeback. You’ll also want a colour that exudes carefree, sun-kissed tones and products that fight the frizz and keep your style locked all day. To give you an idea of what works best for the hottest season and what might be the new ‘it’ colour and cut, we asked our expert .

1.       We hear colour contouring is a thing now. Can you explain what this is?

Colour contouring is a technique we use to add lightness or shadow to accentuate or detract from a client’s features. The eye is always attracted to light first, so we might add lightness around the eyes to attract the eye there. Or to narrow the neck we might add depth around the neckline to detract the eye from that area. When we talk about face shape, oval is considered perfect and colour contouring can be used for this also. If someone has a long face shape we might choose to add depth at the top and counter lighter pieces around the sides to add width. To narrow a round face we could contour lighter pieces through the top and add contour highlights at the ends below the chin to help lengthen the face thus creating a more oval face shape.

2.       As for the hair colour of the season, what do you predict this will be for the summer ahead?

There's a new blonde in town for the next season and it's called ‘nude’.
Nude is a mix of cool blonde tones and warm blonde tones throughout the hair. It's soft and anyone can wear it. Depending on if you are cool toned or warm toned, your stylist will add your complement tone around the face then mix the tones as they apply the colour throughout. Clients tend to go lighter and brighter in summer months compared to the cooler deeper tones of winter. For my clients who favour red tones I may brighten with a few copper reds finely weaved through. This adds a pop of colour  to softly shift the tone for a new look without a total change. Seasons change and so does colour so don’t be afraid to talk to your stylist about what else may suit your summer look.

3.       When it comes to cuts, we’re seeing a lot of long fringes and choppy layers. What advice would you give someone wanting to cut in a fringe for the first time?

Consultations are usually free at the hairdressers. Book in and discuss the fringe that will best suit your face shape and lifestyle as these can be deciding factors on your final look.
Fringes can be a little bit of maintenance as far as styling and regular trims but can change up your look beautifully. If it’s been a while since you had a fringe you may need to train your part line out of your fringe area. Dry your fringe downwards with the drier to get it to sit and use a comb or brush to style your fringe side-to-side through the part line. Once hair is dry and you have closed the part in your fringe use an iron to set the shape.

4.       Are we saying goodbye to the LOB, or is it here to stay for another season?

It will be around for a while yet. It's a fantastic step away from long hair without going for the big chop. It's versatile and can be easily styled in many different ways straight, wavy. textured or left to dry with natural texture.. After long hair being so popular it’s been great to see a shift back to something slightly shorter it updates any look. I recommend Joico’s .  Perfect product for this style as you can add touchable texture in a simple spray to update any look.

5.       When it comes to summer styling, what products do you swear by to minimise frizz through summer? Why?

Texture is actually ‘in’ this season, but for those still wanting frizz free hair, my go-to product is Joico’s . Applying this to damp hair will help to smooth it and treat the hair with moisture and nourishment. Used in dry hair it will add incredible smoothness and shine, eliminating frizz instantly.
Follow up with Joico’s latest treatment . After just one treatment your hair will be stronger, shinier and smoother. This product repairs hair leaving it better after just one application.
