International mass market store expands into Oz

Known for its flat-pack furniture and affordable decorative accents, IKEA has long been a go-to for Australians. But it’s about to come up against stiff competition, with the Japanese version of the brand, MUJI, adding a number of stores to its line-up in Australasia. But one thing MUJI offers that IKEA doesn’t is an vast array of lifestyle products, including make-up.

MUJI markets itself on simplicity, offering consumers fashion, furniture and cosmetics products at low prices. With 700 stores worldwide, continued interest from Australians within Japan encouraged an Australian integration, beginning in Melbourne in 2013. Expansion for MUJI is now eminent, with two more stores in Victoria and three in Sydney expected by 2018.

Local stores will provide the same beauty offerings for the bathroom cupboard and the home that can be found in Japan. This includes bath and shower products, nail and make-up tool kits, aromatherapy and home fragrances.
