Missed your bus. STRESS. You forgot to press record for last night’s episode of The Bachelor. STRESS. You organised two Tinder dates on the one night. STRESS, STRESS, STRESS. Each day presents a host of different stresses for women aged 25-40, and unfortunately on top of giving us high blood pressure, these stresses are having a detrimental effect on our skin. After realising that stress was a catalyst behind ageing skin concerns for this demographic, set out to do something about it. is the latest skincare line from Elizabeth Arden and works to address the first signs of ageing. Here, Elizabeth Arden vice president Art Pellegrino reveals what effect stress is having on our skin and how its new product range is coming to the rescue...

Why did Elizabeth Arden feel it was important to launch a collection specifically targeting stressed out millennials?

Research shows that millennials are the most stressed out generation, with chronic stress affecting women more than men. Today’s millennial woman is at the top of her game and the world is at her fingertips. She is perhaps juggling a career, family, social life and going through many stressful, but wonderful, life milestones (having children, buying a home, climbing the corporate ladder, etc). Her stress level may be at an all-time high and her skin paying the price. After evaluating our current product line-up as well as the marketplace as a whole, it was very apparent that an age-appropriate skincare line to counteract this consumer’s stress and re-energise her skin was missing. Within our Elizabeth Arden R&D team, we wanted to change this and bring a line like Flawless Future to the market.

What effect does stress have on our skin?

Studies have shown that stress speeds up the ageing process, giving way to the premature appearance of uneven skin tone, fine lines, dark circles, etc. The unique technologies within the Flawless Future products allow it to help slow down the effects of stress on the skin, making it a product line that targets the first signs of ageing.

What role do ceramides play in helping retain skin’s youth?

Elizabeth Arden pioneered the use of ceramides within skincare and our original Daily Youth Restoring Serum Capsules have been a top seller for more than 20 years. We discovered that there are nine natural ceramides that comprise 50 per cent of the essential lipids found in the skin’s barrier layer (stratum corneum), and not only do they provide for a hydrated, smooth and vibrant appearance, but they also serve as the skin’s first line of defence against signs of ageing. Each of Elizabeth Arden’s ceramide product lines, including Flawless Future, features a blended ratio of bio-engineered, skin-identical ceramides that help remind the skin how to act youthful again. Flawless Future’s ceramide blend performs more efficiently in repairing the skin’s appearance and retaining youthful, hydrated properties lost due to stress.

What happens to skin’s natural ceramides when a woman is stressed?

Through the course of natural ageing, different ceramides begin to deplete at different points of the process. Millennial women who suffer from high stress experience an accelerated depletion of their natural ceramides and, as a result, skin begins to look dry and dull, and lines and wrinkles become more visible.

What are telomeres and what do they have to do with stress?

Telomeres are the tiny branches at the tips of each chromosome that are responsible for perfect cell replication. As we age naturally, these branches begin to shorten until they are so small that the cell can no longer replicate. This cell ageing eventually shows up on our skin; first as dullness, unevenness, fine lines and eventually as lax skin with more distinct wrinkles.  Most recently, scientists have directly linked stress to increased shortening of telomeres, ergo ageing signs make an earlier appearance - in some cases as much as a decade earlier.

How does Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide help skin be stress-free?

Flawless Future targets skin texture, clarity and radiance to help visibly improve skin’s appearance so skin looks stress-free, even if you aren’t. Immediate benefits see skin moisture and hydration replenished, skin texture and radiance improved for a smooth and luminous complexion, and the short-term effects of stress on skin are relieved. Long-term benefits include skin looking less stressed and more energised, skin’s brightness and radiance are restored, and dark spots and discolourations caused by factors like acne and sun exposure are diminished.

Who is the ideal woman for these products?

Women between the ages of 25-40 are the ideal group for this product line. It’s important to note that anti-ageing skincare products pack potent ingredients for maximum efficacy, but what’s suitable for a woman in her 50’s is not suitable for someone in her 20’s and 30’s because she is experiencing different ageing symptoms than those experienced by more mature women. Flawless Future formulas are specifically designed for this age set and the first signs of ageing she is experiencing that may not yet even be visible to the naked eye.

Is this an anti-ageing product line?

At Elizabeth Arden, we like to think of Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide as the first step into anti-ageing for young women living busy lifestyles and that’s what makes it so amazing.

When should people switch to using a true anti-ageing product line like Ceramide Lift and Firm?

Ceramide Lift and Firm features a different ceramide blend that targets the natural ceramides that begin to deplete at age 40+ and cause more prominent lines and wrinkles and elasticity loss. You can begin to transition to this product line at age 40 or when these symptoms become apparent.
