The UK has banned microbeads

The UK government just announced that they have now banned the use of microbeads in wash-off personal products.

The decision comes following a consultation into the use of microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products. As was established, the small spheres of plastic used in facial scrubs and exfoliants go down the drain and end up in the sea. Once in the ocean they are ingested by sea life and ultimately end up back in our food chain.

The ban will come into effect from next year, with a ban on manufacturing rinse-off products containing microplastics from 1 January 2018, and the sale from 30 June 2018.
