It's one of the buzziest ingredients in skincare right now, but it's actually been lubricating our cosmetics for years. The difference is that these days, it is derived from a much more palatable source.
Here's all you need to know about this excellent emollient.
What is it?
Squalane is an oil our bodies produce naturally (as sebum). In cosmetics, squalane was originally derived from shark liver, but modern formulas source the emollient from plants such as olives, sugar or beets. It’s high in fatty acids making it a brilliant ingredient for keeping skin moisturised and protected.
How does it work?
Where hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge on the surface of the skin to attract moisture and plump the skin, Philippa Griffith of By Nature explains that squalene oil is able to penetrate to a deeper level. “Because our skin recognises the molecular structure of this fantastic oil, it is quickly absorbed into the pores where it hydrates at a cellular level”.
Who is it best suited to?
Squalane oil has a lightweight texture and won’t clog pores so it’s suitable for all skin types. “It doesn’t feel heavy or greasy on the skin, and is great for use every day” says Philippa.
How do I use it?
As well smoothing it on to provide hydration anywhere on the body including face, décolletage and hands, Philippa says the squalane oil itself is also great for use on dry or damaged hair. “Simply work a few drops through the lengths of hair to make it soft and shiny.”
What else do I need to know?
Squalane or squalene? In a nutshell, squalane is derived from squalene in a lab by a process call hydrogenation. This simply makes its compounds become more saturated and therefore, less prone to oxidising.
