The official announcement from the Therapeutics Goods Administration will be released tomorrow, but sunscreen brands are already excited to reveal the TGA has confirmed that from November 10, 2012 – the new 50+ sunscreen Standards will take legislative effect in Australia.
The new sunscreen Standard will see an increase in the maximum SPF claim from 30+ to 50+, as well as having a higher UVA protection.
The significant change for consumers will be that with the new legislation taking effect, products claiming SPF50+ broad spectrum will now offer higher UVA protection,” says La Roche-Posay general manager Caroline Collier.
An Ella Baché press release reads: SPF 50+ is the biggest breakthrough for the Australian sunscreen industry since the 1990’s. The skincare experts at Ella Baché have developed a SPF 50+ formula that combines powerful broad spectrum protection of UV filters that provide the first line of defence from UV damage and helps to prevent the penetration of UV light into the skin.”
adds: "Given Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world due to our climate and large fair-skinned population, the change in the Standard is a step in the right direction to help combat UV damage and skin cancer in Australia."
