Is Amazon branching into high-end beauty?

Rumours surrounding Amazon are rife at the moment, especially here in Australia with its approaching launch next year. However, multiple market sources have given beauty fans reason to celebrate as it appears that the e-tailing behemoth is partnering with luxury beauty site Violet Grey.

The partnership would ensure that more luxury brands could enter Amazon’s marketplace, as Violet Grey stocks the likes of Chanel, Tom Ford, Le Labo and La Mer.

Founder and CEO of Violet Grey, Cassandra Grey, neither confirmed nor denied the rumour, saying: “I cannot confirm a special relationship with Amazon apart from the fact that I have enormous respect for the company and view the platform as one of the only five distribution partners that matter for digital content producers, particularly those of us who ride or die to serve the almighty modern consumer.”

Founder and CEO of consumer insight consultancy Spark spoke with Glossy about the way a luxury beauty pillar to Amazon may affect the market: “Amazon is a warehouse shipping company, which is nothing to sneeze at. They do it better than anyone else.

“When you’re out of a product and you want to replenish it, you want it immediately and there’s a lot of value in that. Sales will come their way because they’re good at shipping, but people don’t see them as a vehicle for discovery, not as a curator.”
