Ultra Violette provides update on SPF discrepancy

After failing the CHOICE sunscreen testing back in June 2025, where its Lean Screen™ sunscreen returned an SPF of 4 and was subsequently pulled from market, Ultra Violette has provided an update to its community.

"When you last heard from us on this topic, we were continuing to investigate the discrepancy in SPF testing results that led to the voluntary recall of our mineral-only product, Lean Screen™," Ultra Violette co-founders, Bec Jefferd and Ava Chandler-Matthews wrote in a statement.

"Since then, we've interrogated every single one of our processes, from how we formulate and test our products to how results are reviewed and verified, raising our standards every step of the way."

"One of the biggest outcomes was the development of an even more robust testing and validation framework – one that goes way beyond the standard regulatory requirements."

The statement outlined the new framework, which is as follows:

1. Every new Ultra Violette formula will now undergo at least two, and in many cases three to five, rounds of testing across different independent laboratories, including both SPF and UVA performance, before launch.

2. Importantly, every existing product in our range has also been retested under these new protocols, consistently returning results above SPF 50 and giving us complete confidence in our entire range.

3. We’ve also deepened our regulatory expertise and strengthened our review process, with every external test result now independently reviewed and signed off on both internally and externally.

4. Together, these reports and independent sign-offs form what we internally call our ‘Testing Dossier’ – a comprehensive record we’ve built for every product in our range.

5. We are committed to retesting every product every 18 months to ensure no variation in results over time.

6. Finally, we are playing our part to drive the industry forward, participating directly in the TGA’s consultation on sunscreen regulatory reform in the hope that we can continue to see improvements made across the category.

In the wake of Lean Screen™ being pulled from market, Ultra Violette's new iteration of its mineral-only, fragrance-free sunscreen is now here, meet Velvet Screen™

"We know many of you had become emotionally attached to Lean Screen™, and bringing a mineral-only sunscreen back into our range of SKINSCREENS™ comes with high expectations," shared Jefferd and Chandler-Matthews.

"To everyone who has continued to support us and share their feedback throughout this process: thank you. We are not done improving. But we are excited to introduce you to the product that’s come out of all this work."
