The new way of ageing that skincare is targeting

Following the discovery that blue light emitted from smartphones and laptops can be just as damaging to skin as UVA or UVB rays, skincare is stepping up to fix the problem.

A new wave of products are hitting the market that offer protection from blue, or High Energy Visible light, that is frequently emitted from tech devices. Blue light only has two sources – screens and the sun –  so the idea is that while you may be able to block the effects of the sun with sunscreen and other skin protectants, skin is still at risk of being exposed to the harsh blue light.

Another detrimental effect of blue light is the free radicals it produces, causing a decrease in collagen – a telltale sign of ageing.

While more research is needed into the definitive effects of blue light on our health, it is commonly acknowledged that it will have a cumulative effect on the skin.

If blue light exposure is a concern, look out for skincare that offers environmental blocks.
