Inspiration: ‘Best Actress in a TV Series’ nominee Margulies chose to enhance her natural beauty on the red carpet, opting for a minimalistic style much like many attendees at the Globes.
How to: Rosy cheeks and lips were the finishing touch to Margulies’ creamy, flawless base of foundation and lightly dusted powder. To achieve a similar look, Stern suggests the use of Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Cream Blush with a pink, rose or plum eyeshadow to ensure red carpet longevity.
Who: Julia Louis-Dreyfus by make-up artist Karen Kawahara for .
Inspiration: To match the sleek white column gown in which she was adorned, Louis-Dreyfus embraced a 1960s style approach to her beauty look, pairing sleek long hair with smoky eye make-up that focused on making the eyes and lashes really stand out.
How to: Kawahara embraced a feminine palette for her make-up. “Soft smoky shadows were complemented with pops of pink on the cheeks and lip,” says Kawahara.
Who: Leslie Mann by make-up artist Jillian Dempsey for .
Inspiration: Mann went with a bold lip, which worked wonders in preventing her from being washed out by her shimmering, canary-coloured dress.
How to: Dempsey achieved the vibrant pout using Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour Moisturizing Lipstick in Marigold. This was complemented with lashings of mascara and side-swept locks.
Who: Amal Clooney by make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury for Charlotte Tilbury.
Inspiration: Undoubtedly inspired by Clooney’s classic style, Tilbury (who was also the master behind Sienna Miller’s make-up) crafted a look for her that can only be described as true Old Hollywood glamour.
How to: After perfecting the base, Tilbury created a strong brow by using Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift in Cara D. She then applied eyeliner around the eye and followed this with three coats of mascara on the top lashes and a single coat on the bottom. Next, she used Filmstar Bronze & Glow to sculpt the face, revealing: “I’ve been using this trick on stars on the red carpet for years.” To finish, she gave Clooney a rosy pout with the help of Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Savage Rose and a mixture of K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Night Crimson and Matte Revolution Lipstick in Red Carpet Red.
Who: Jessica Chastain by make-up artist Kristofer Buckle for Yves Saint Laurent.
Inspiration: For the red carpet, Kristofer created a glamorous, glowing and smouldering make-up look.
How-to: Kristofer created a perfect complexion using Teint Touche Eclat illuminating foundation Beige Dore and Touche Eclat N°1, along with Blush Volupté N°8 on the cheeks for a soft pink effect. Kristofer then created a smoky eye with Couture Palette n°3 and N°1, Effet faux cils crème d’eyeliner – Deep black, and Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll Fetish Black. As for the lips, he opted for Baby Doll Kiss and Blush N°7 with Volupté Sheer Candy N°1 on top.
Hair
Who: Naomi Watts by hair stylist Cervando for .
Inspiration: The Golden Globes red carpet was dominated by retro styles and deep side parts. This hairdo was an ideal match for Watts’ 1950s-style strapless gown. “I created chic, modern, slightly retro waves to perfectly complement Naomi’s personality and style,” explains Cervando.
How to: To achieve the look, use fingers to rake a small palm-sized amount of Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse into damp hair from root to tip. With a comb, create a deep side part. Next, blow-dry hair section by section with a round brush for a soft and smooth finish and set hair at the top of the head in velcro rollers. Use curling irons to wrap one-inch sections of hair around the barrels, leaving the ends straight to create a modern, natural wave. Then remove the velcro rollers and sweep the hair across the forehead with a hair brush. Finish with hairspray.
Who: Diane Kruger by hair stylist Jen Atkin for .
Inspiration: “To complement the ethereal iridescent fabric of Diane’s dress and gorgeous earrings, I wanted to create a modern version of retro waves. Diane’s hairstyle is soft and elegant,” says Atkin.
How to: Using Moroccanoil products, Atkin used curling irons to tong the hair into 1950s style waves. After setting with plenty of hairspray, Atkin brushed out the hair and used a straightener to tame any fly-aways.
Who: Kate Hudson by hair stylist David Babaii for .
Inspiration: Chic chignon.
How to: Blowdry hair using the ghd air hairdryer and a ceramic vented radial brush. Part the hair down the middle and divide into three sections, two in the front and one in the back. Starting at the back of the head and working forwards, take 4 cm sections and straighten the hair with the eclipse. Pull hair into a low, tight bun at the nape of the neck using bobby pins to secure.
Skin
Who: Allison Williams by make-up artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato for .
Inspiration: The duo were eager to achieve a look that was classic with a modern twist. Ceciliato says they wanted “Old Hollywood glamour with a rock and roll edge”.
How to: The Girls actress sported a winning combination made up of a glowing complexion, bold, smoky eyes and a nude lip. As for her evenly bronzed glow, Ceciliato reveals it was achieved by “sweeping St. Tropez Instant Tan Light/Medium onto exposed skin using the St. Tropez Applicator Mitt to create luminous, dewy skin that just reflects the flashing lights of the camera”.
Nails
Who: Maggie Gyllenhaal wearing essie.
Inspiration: A red carpet look is one that requires the polishing of every aspect of an outfit, from hair follicle to nail cuticle. Many famous ladies opted to complete their glamorous ensembles at the Golden Globes with a sleek manicure using essie nail polish.
How to: After buffing and filing nails to the desired shape and shine, two layers of coloured polish were applied and finished with a topcoat. Maggie Gyllenhaal chose to accessorise her nails with the pretty pink shade of Mademoiselle.
