Australians still hooked on Snapchat

According to new figures released by Snap Inc. Australians are still avid users of Snapchat despite the launch of the competitive Instagram Stories earlier this year.

For the first time since its launch, the company has revealed how many Aussies are on the platform. Deloitte reported in 2015 that Australia has 15 million smartphone users, and a substantial four million of these are active users on Snapchat.

When it comes to demographics, Australia imitates the global trend with 18 to 24-year-olds the most active on the platform and 25 to 34-year-olds the second biggest demographic.

This announcement comes only a few months after Snapchat opened its first office in Australia, based in Sydney, housing 15 employees. This year has also seen the platform push Australia-specific initiatives such as partnering with local publications like news.com.au and dropping live stories from events like the ARIA Awards and the upcoming Splendour in the Grass music festival.

Compared to other social platforms, the AFR reports that Australia has 12 million users on Facebook and seven million on Instagram. Twitter is yet to reveal its numbers regarding the Australian market.
