Top Pinterest searches: What women really want

What better occasion than International Women’s Day this March 8, to celebrate women around the world? And in honour of that, Pinterest has taken a closer look at what women really care about.

Searches for International Women’s Day start as early as January, and spike an average of 451% to March, on average searches from 2016 and 2017, as people look for inspiration and ways to feel empowered and embrace what is unique about themselves.

This year, women are taking the lead in business, creating their own rules when it comes to traditions and embracing natural beauty. Here are four searches women are discovering on Pinterest.

There is no one beauty ideal

Women are embracing their unique selves more than ever, with searches for ‘plus size beauties,' up 762% and ‘flattering outfits for plus size,’ up 582%. Out of the top 100 search terms related to skin, 58% were searches for different coloured skin, including dark, medium, pale, brown, and skin tones such as olive and cool. Also ‘stop body shaming quotes’ (+371%) and ‘body positivity quotes’ (+78%) were included.

Embracing the natural

Women are connecting more with a natural look, searching for ‘body hair positivity’ (+158%) and using Pinterest to search for ‘heavy period hacks’ (+181%). And 44% of Pinners believe an approach to wellness is having a natural look, by using the right beauty and personal care products.

Creating their own rules

While valuing traditions, women are becoming more creative when it comes to certain customs. Turning the tables and looking for inspiration, woman are researching to do the proposal themselves, up 336%, calculated using normalised searches from October 2017 to October 2018.

Women taking the lead

Women are turning to Pinterest for inspiration on starting their own business, with searches on ‘business motivation,’ up 182%. There are also tens of millions of searches around different types of businesses, including planning, small business tips, and marketing.
