The rise of probiotics in beauty

The beauty industry is abuzz about them and they’re popping up everywhere from skincare to supplements but how exactly can probiotics benefit us?

To learn more about the overlap between health and beauty, and specifically probiotics, we talked to Debbie Dickson, Head of Education at DMK Australia and New Zealand.

We have seen an increasing number of spas and clinics now offering wellness supplements and probiotics – tell us about this trend…

Over the past few years, the topic of digestive health has gone mainstream, with both consumers and therapists being more aware of its important function and power. It’s an exciting step in the right direction, as digestive health really is incredibly important for overall health and wellbeing.

There is increasing research to support how important digestive health is to our overall wellbeing. Healthy gut flora optimises our digestive system providing a variety of functions including; nutrient absorption and assimilation of vitamins and minerals, hormonal signalling and breaking down and rebuilding hormones, helping to prevent colds, flus, yeast infections and decreasing inflammation.

When you consider that the digestive system is where vitamins, nutrients and minerals are all absorbed; factors such as stress, lack of sleep, antibiotics, the contraceptive pill, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug, illness, ageing and poor diet choices can all often lead to an imbalance of the bacteria in your digestive tract.

…and the connection to our skin?

The skin is a mirror for what’s happening within, so it makes sense that clinics would need to consult and understand their clients’ overall health and lifestyle choices if they want to treat the cause of the skin problem and deliver long-term and maintainable results.

Just like skincare, often the effectiveness often comes down to the ingredients - how can we monitor the effectiveness?

There are a growing number of dietary supplements in the market but not all formulas and ingredients are equal, and as a consequence there is a lot of confusion in the market, both with clinics and consumers. The most effective supplements include readily bio-available ingredients (not synthetic) and quality formulations in the appropriate dosages.

Do you foresee that supplements and probiotics will become a major player in the beauty industry?

I believe that modern life has increased the prevalence of stressors to our bodies - our clients’ understand this and want a holistic approach to wellness that improves not only how they look but also how they feel.
