Nearly half of men not using sunscreen

In Australia it seems each year we are becoming more knowledgeable on the dangers of the sun, but the same may not be said for those living in the US with a new survey finding 49 per cent of US men admit to not using sunscreen in the past 12 months.

The Skin Cancer Foundation, in partnership with Energizer Holdings who makes Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens, conducted the survey which also found 70 per cent of men don’t know the warning sings of skin cancer, reports GCI Magazine.

A common mistake made by Australian consumers is not topping up their sunscreen application, and this was also the case for the US male survey participants. It was found that 61 per cent believe one sunscreen application protects skin for at least four hours, despite the recommended reapplication being once every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Additionally, the survey found 64 per cent of men are under the misconception that women need more sunscreen than they do because their skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
